Salisbury Steak Meatballs are awesome. Really. These fantastic meatballs have a great kick by adding a little Montreal Steak Seasoning, crushed red pepper flakes and pepper to the meatballs and the sauce. This savory dish is everything you could hope for in a meal. The sauce is gravy-like add includes onions, leeks and mushrooms for incredibly good flavor. I made the recipe gluten free by using gluten free bread crumbs and gluten free flour. But this recipe is easily made with regular bread crumbs and flour.

Back in April our Friday night care group hosted our church’s Young at Heart group for dinner. We provided six different kinds of meatballs. Sweet and Sour Meatballs, Pepperoni Pizza Meatballs, Swedish Meatballs, Italian Spaghetti and Meatballs, Slow Cooker Cocktail (BBQ) Meatballs and these sumptuous Salisbury Steak Meatballs. We also provided Easy Baked Rice and multiple kinds of pasta including gluten free penne.

We got all kinds of wonderful feedback about the meatballs. Almost everyone sampled one meatball of each! The one I got the most feedback about was the Salisbury Steak Meatballs. Without exception, everyone loved them! We served the meatballs over dumpling noodles (although thick extra wide Amish noodles would be even better) and rice. You could also serve these over mashed potatoes if you prefer that option.

While I’ve given a guide on how much Montreal Steak Seasoning and pepper I used to spice up these meatballs, you can always cut the amounts down if you prefer a little less heat. Or….add more if your family likes to spice things up. I actually modeled the recipe after my Smothered Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Onion Gravy. If you enjoy the savory flavors of Salisbury Steak then you’ll absolutely love this recipe too.

One of the things I really like about this recipe is the meatballs are baked rather than fried. I know that’s a personal preference issue with me. I just don’t like all the spatter and having to turn and turn and turn meatballs all the time. This is much easier and less time consuming. From beginning to end the recipe takes under an hour. Since the meatballs and sauce cook at the same time, that cuts down the time considerably.

Whether you’re cooking for a crowd or just your family, this delicious Salisbury Steak Meatballs recipe should be on the menu! It’s one of those recipes you’ll never be able to get enough of once you start digging in. And, believe me, dig in, you will. 🙂

Place ground beef, ketchup, eggs, gluten free bread crumbs, salt, pepper, Montreal Steak Seasoning, parmesan cheese, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, crushed red pepper flakes, marjoram and garlic powder in a mixing bowl.

Mix thoroughly with your hands.

Roll meatball mixture into balls and place on a large cookie sheet that’s been sprayed with cooking spray.

Bake at 350 about 30-40 minutes or until browned. Meanwhile, prepare Salisbury Steak sauce.

I used these ingredients for the sauce.

Place avocado oil in a skillet. Add onions that have been sliced and separated into rings.

Add diced leeks, minced garlic and sliced mushrooms.

Stir ingredients to combine. Saute about 5-10 minutes or until veggies are tender.

Add gluten free flour. Stir to combine.

Add salt, pepper, Montreal Steak Seasoning and Kitchen Bouquet Seasoning.

Add Worcestershire sauce. (I used a gluten free brand). Stir ingredients to combine.

Add beef broth.

Heat through.

  • 1 sharp knife to cut vegetables
  • 1 18x26" cookie sheet pan
  • parchment paper
  • 1 large Dutch oven with lid
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 1 spatula

Ingredients
  

MEATBALLS:

  • 2 1/4 lbs 93% or 96% lean ground beef or ground sirloin
  • 1 1/2 cups 4C Gluten Free Italian Style Bread Crumbs or regular Italian style bread crumbs
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce (Lea & Perrin's makes a gluten free sauce)
  • 2 tbsp. ketchup
  • 1 tsp. sea salt
  • 1/2 to 3/4 tsp. pepper as desired
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp. Montreal steak seasoning as desired
  • 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 tsp. dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp. dried marjoram
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder

SALISBURY STEAK GRAVY:

  • 8 oz. fresh mushrooms sliced
  • 2 large white onions sliced and separated into rings
  • 2 leeks green tops removed, thoroughly washed and diced or sliced
  • 3-4 cloves garlic minced
  • 24-32 oz. ctn. beef broth (use less for thicker gravy)
  • 1/4 cup avocado oil or olive oil or 1/4 cup unsalted butter (1/2 stick)
  • 2/3 cup gluten free flour or regular all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce (Lea & Perrin's makes a gluten free sauce)
  • 1/4 tsp. Montreal steak seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp. sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp. kitchen bouquet seasoning and browning sauce
  • 1 tsp. fresh parsley for garnish, as desired

Instructions
 

MEATBALLS:

  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Combine ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
  • Form into meatballs the size of golf balls.
  • Place meatballs on parchment paper-lined cookie sheets (or spray with avocado oil cooking spray).
  • Bake for about 30-40 minutes until done.
  • Remove from oven.
  • Add to Dutch oven with Salisbury Steak Gravy.
  • Serve over mashed potatoes, cooked noodles or rice, as desired.

SALISBURY STEAK GRAVY:

  • Heat a Dutch oven with ¼ cup butter or oil and heat to medium heat.
  • Add onions and cook about 8-10 minutes until they brown slightly but not caramelize.
  • Add garlic, leeks and mushrooms and sauté an additional 5-10 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in flour, Worcestershire sauce, Kitchen Bouquet Seasoning, Montreal Steak Seasoning and salt and pepper.
  • Begin adding beef stock slowly until worked into the gravy.
  • Continue cooking a few minutes until gravy thickens.
  • Add cooked meatballs and heat through.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley before serving over mashed potatoes, cooked noodles or rice.

Notes

NOTE: I actually used 38 ounces of beef broth as I was trying to get rid of some from another carton in my refrigerator. But I recommend between 24-32 ounces so the gravy will be thicker. I have also made this with about 42 ounces of beef broth.
 
NOTE: The combined cook time is about an hour. Since the meatballs and sauce are cooking simultaneously, the length of time is closer to 30 minutes - the time required to cook the meatballs.
 
NOTE: I included a range of seasoning for those who don't care as much for a slight kick in their foods. I used the larger amounts of pepper, crushed red pepper flakes and Montreal Steak Seasoning in the meatballs.
 
NOTE: My personal preference for gluten free noodles is Ronzoni.
 
NOTE: If you don't require a gluten free meal, this recipe works perfectly with regular Italian style bread crumbs and regular flour as well.
