I’ve been wanting to make these since before the holidays but just couldn’t get around to it. Finally, I had an opportunity last week to let ‘er rip! These fabulous brownies with a Reese Peanut Butter Cup hidden away inside turned out better than my expectations!

For peanut butter lovers or chocolate lovers, these goodies can’t be beat! Your sweet tooth will be completely satisfied with the surprise in these brownies!
I initially made this recipe in January 2014 for my husband to take as a gift with him on a trip to Atlanta. He also brought Oreo Cookie Surprises and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Surprises. All the brownies were a huge hit with everyone he left the goodies with. The pictures for this recipe, however, were rushed and not my favorite representatives of this delectable brownie. I recently remade this recipe (February 2023) for a retirement party for someone at my husband’s former place of employment. He and his wife (and kids) have loved my Christmas cookies for the past two and a half decades. I thought these brownies would be a great send off. I was right. They LOVED them! You will too. 🙂

This view shows the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups hidden away in the brownies.
Here’s what I did.
I used these ingredients.
In a large mixing bowl, melt butter.
Add cocoa, sugar, eggs, and flour and coarsely chopped walnuts (or pecans.)
Stir to combine.
Spread half of the brownie mixture in the bottom of a 9×13″ glass baking dish that’s been sprayed with cooking spray.
Remove wax paper wrappers from Reese peanut butter cups. Place peanut butter cups in a 4×6 pattern for a total of 24 large size Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.
Spread remaining brownie mixture over top of the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.
Bake at 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean and mixture is set.
Don’t you just love the peanut butter oozing out of the brownie?

I’m a little confused. I bought the half stick butter sizes and it says each one of those is a quarter cup. This recipe says two and a half sticks but by Land O’Lakes laboring that’s one and a quarter cups of melted butter not one cup of butter as listed in parentheses. Also in the photo it shows significant amount of space between the peanut butter cups and a 9×13 as the recipe calls for but I use a 9×13 Pyrex and 24 peanut butter cups are touching on all sides and each edge I even had to squish some of them a bit. I don’t understand how you can have oozing liquid peanut butter when the heat isn’t high enough to liquefy the peanut butter cup inside. I feel like the photos have almost nothing in common with the recipe as listed. What a disappointment.

Hi, Matt. I’m sorry this was confusing and you were disappointed. I realized I didn’t have the correct amount of cups next to the butter ingredient in the recipe. It should be 1 1/4 cups. 1 stick = 8 tablespoons or 1/2 cup. 2 1/2 sticks = 20 tablespoons or 1 1/4 cups. I’ve updated the recipe to reflect the correct information. Unfortunately the pyrex dishes aren’t the best for this particular recipe. I’ve never felt they measured to a full 9 1/2 x 13″. I don’t think these brownies have oozing liquid peanut butter, but the peanut butter is softened after baking. The outcome was fantastic in my opinion, and those of the folks I gave them to.
