Strawberry Blueberry Avocado Salad with Strawberry Poppyseed Vinaigrette
Gluten Free Living – 2014
Strawberry Blueberry Avocado Salad with Strawberry Poppyseed Vinaigrette is one of my new salad faves. I love avocados, and I wanted to see how they would pair up with fruits like strawberries and blueberries in a salad. The one thing about working with avocados is you really have to use them up immediately or they discolor quickly.

To make a really nice looking and festive salad you’ll have to find avocados that are not totally ripe because you don’t want them mashing up while you’re trying to cut them into slices or pieces. A firmer avocado is in order here. I tried them in this tossed salad with sliced almonds and feta cheese and they were amazing.
Then I decided to add some lemon zest to the salad to see how that combination would work. Finally, as I was making a homemade dressing, I didn’t like how the balsamic vinegar made the dressing so brown. 🙁 So, to solve that issue I added a bunch of strawberries I really needed to use up anyway, and I got a colorful, tasty vinaigrette to top this lovely salad.
Strawberry Blueberry Avocado Salad with Strawberry Poppyseed Vinaigrette is really quite easy to make. I just layered the ingredients in a salad bowl then added the avocados and tossed everything right before serving. It only took about 10 or 15 minutes. The dressing was quick and easy too. That only took about 5 minutes to prepare.
The nice thing about this recipe is it’s got so many healthy ingredients. Avocados, even though high in calories, provide the good oils and nutrients that help increase your metabolism. This salad is also gluten free and fairly low calorie, all things considered.
If you’re looking for a tasty salad recipe and you don’t mind mixing fruits and veggies, then give Strawberry Blueberry Avocado Salad with Strawberry Poppyseed Vinaigrette a try sometime. I would have added a little diced red onion to the salad, but my husband prefers that I leave it off. That would give the salad a little more bite.
You can also change out the cheese for blue cheese or goat cheese, and exchange almonds for pecans, walnuts, cashews or peanuts. This is a salad you can adapt easily to your family’s tastebuds. The same thing can be said about the salad dressing. You can change up the oil and the vinegar to use those your family prefers. No matter what you try the avocados really shine in this recipe. But then again, I live in Texas. We think avocados make everything a little bit better….just like bacon…..just sayin’. 🙂
Strawberry Blueberry Avocado Salad with Strawberry Poppyseed Vinaigrette is a light, refreshing salad for hot summer days.
The Strawberry Poppyseed Vinaigrette can be made sweeter with more honey, or have a little more bite by adding more green onions and hot, spicy mustard. It all depends on your particular palate.
You can also switch out the oil for a milder oil like avocado oil, and a milder vinegar like apple cider vinegar.
There are lots of juicy strawberries, blueberries and avocado slices in this tasty salad.
Here’s what I did.
Layer Butter Bliss lettuce in a salad bowl. Add sliced strawberries, blueberries, sliced almonds, lemon zest and feta cheese over top. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Add avocado slices just before serving.
I used these ingredients for the salad dressing along with strawberries.
Balsamic vinegar is really strong. If you’re not used to its taste I’d recommend changing it out for apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar. I used grapeseed oil because that was what was readily available at the time. I now would recommend using avocado oil instead.
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Now add sliced strawberries and puree again.
Check taste of the dressing. If you want your dressing a little sweeter, add a little more honey or sugar.
The Strawberry Poppyseed Vinaigrette can be made sweeter if you prefer a sweeter dressing or more pungent if that’s what you prefer. You make the call.
The lemon zest adds a nice flavor to this salad. You can also serve this with Healthy Lemon Poppy Seed Dressing.

Raspberry Poppyseed Dressing – Can't Stay Out of the Kitchen

[…] I, personally, really enjoy Greek yogurt dressings. My husband isn’t much of a fan, but it’s a way I’ll eat a lot more salad. I’m not, and never have been, a big Ranch dressing fan (not just because it’s filled with a lot of junk), it’s just a taste thing. I’ve always liked sweeter dressings, probably because I have such a strong sweet tooth. While I like olive oil and vinegar dressings (if they’re slightly sweetened), I like a creamier dressing better. A little bit of honey makes all the difference. So I’ve made quite a few of them and posted them on my blog. […]

You are too kind, Shari. Thanks so much for the sweet words. The nice thing about both the salad and dressing is you can add or subtract to make it your own!
