For those of you who have a garden, you are probably always looking for Ways To Use Home Grown Tomatoes. I thought I would put together a compilation of creative ways you can use that fresh garden produce without so much of it going to waste. More than half of these recipes actually use fresh tomatoes.
I’ve included other recipes because you can easily dice or crush fresh tomatoes to replace the canned or stewed tomatoes in a recipe. Fresh tomatoes usually work very well in soup and chili recipes that call for canned whole tomatoes. You may have to crush or finely dice the tomatoes to get about the same consistency, but almost all of the time the texture will be just as nice if not even better than using canned tomatoes.
Fresh tomatoes will also work fine as a replacement for a can of diced tomatoes and green chilies if you dice up about 1 1/2 cups tomatoes and add about 1/4 cup of diced green chilies for every can you are substituting. You can have almost the same result–yet use up more of those tomatoes that are coming out your ears!
You can also use fresh tomatoes in place of Italian stewed tomatoes. Just add about 1/4 teaspoon of Italian seasoning or 1/8 teaspoon each of basil and oregano. To replace stewed tomatoes, add about 1-2 tablespoons each of chopped onion and celery, as desired.
I have to admit, tomatoes are one of my favorite foods. I’m always finding ways I can add them to recipes. I don’t currently have a garden, but these are some great Ways to Use Home Grown Tomatoes. If you have an abundance of tomatoes you purchased at the store and don’t want them to go bad, check out some of these tasty dishes and consider trying out a few.
Obviously, some of the recipes will use up a whole lot more tomatoes than other recipes, but if you are tired of your regular go-to recipes, consider making a few from my collection. Regardless, I think these delicious tomato recipes will provide some fresh inspiration if you need it.
