Creamy Sweet Peas
Gluten Free Living – 2019
I’m always looking for new and clever ways to prepare vegetables. Creamy Sweet Peas is a fantastic way to prepare peas. This recipe can be ready to go in 10 minutes if you thaw the frozen peas ahead of time. It’s made with cream cheese, butter and heavy whipping cream. That’s a good bit of dairy, but no gluten.

A couple of months ago, my husband told me I needed to start clearing out some of the veggies in our freezers. They had been in there a while and were taking up much needed space. It was time to use them up! So I started making soups, casseroles and other recipes where I could use up a lot of it. I had several bags of peas, and several bags of peas and carrots.
Some went in Easy Chicken Pot Pie. Another bag went in my Beef Noodle Vegetable Casserole. One went in Herbed Beef Stew. You get the idea. I made lots of things to try and get rid of all those veggies.
I finally decided to make up a batch of peas as a side dish. I served Creamy Sweet Peas with Crockpot Beef Stroganoff and Southern-Style Cornbread one night for our Friday night Bible study group. I get that not everyone enjoys peas. But our group sure did. This side dish was very well received.
As I said earlier, I liked the fact that this side dish was made in 10 minutes! I don’t always have the time or the luxury of exotic and lengthy meal prep. So having some quick and easy side dish recipes works really well for me.
Creamy Sweet Peas is wonderful for week night meals when you’re on a time crunch. Just remember to leave the bag of frozen peas in the refrigerator for a few hours (or a day) to thaw. Then you’re good to go when it comes time to make up the recipe. If you enjoy green peas, this is a scrumptious way to make them.

This side dish is gluten free for those with gluten intolerance.
Here’s what I did.
I used these ingredients.
Heat a Dutch oven over low to medium heat. Add butter and cream cheese that’s been cut into cubes.
Whisk mixture continuously until cream cheese is mostly melted.
Add frozen peas that have been thawed.
Stir ingredients to combine and cook over low to medium heat.
Add salt, pepper and sugar.
Stir to combine and continue cooking until peas are cooked – about 3-5 minutes.
Add half-and-half and stir into pea mixture. Heat through – a minute or two.
If desired, season with additional salt and pepper. Serve.
The mixture will actually thicken more as it sits out.
Creamy Sweet Peas is a terrific side dish for company and holidays. It’s quick and easy to make. Plus, it’s gluten free for those with gluten intolerance.
