I’m always looking for creative ways to make cookies. My imagination began spinning and I wondered if I could come up with something to use up some red velvet cake mixes I had leftover from Christmas. I also recently purchased a cherry-chocolate M&Ms package that I wanted to use in some way and decided to give it a whirl!
This quick and easy recipe uses only a handful of ingredients and it tastes wonderfully. It’s filled with lots of chocolaty flavor intermingled with cherry flavor from the cherry flavored M&Ms. Then it has a double dose of chocolate with the M&Ms (being both cherry and chocolate). On top of that it has a triple dose of chocolate with a chocolate glaze drizzled over the top. Does this sound amazing or what??? These festive brownies are elegant and beautiful, too.
As the years have gone by I’ve become more adventurous in the kitchen and cookies are one of the things I really like to play around with. I’m not going to lie and say I haven’t had a few failures along the way, but this isn’t one of them!
I love mixing up recipes and taking a little of this and a little of that from favorite, cherished recipes and putting them together with a new spin. Not only does this great recipe have a red velvet spin, it has a black forest spin! If you like cherries and chocolate you will love this fabulous brownie.
If you’re looking for a quick and easy brownie recipe that’s festive and beautiful for special occasions, holiday entertaining or Valentine’s Day, or just something to whip up quickly for a family dessert, why not consider giving Red Velvet Cherry Chocolate Brownies a try?
When I initially posted this recipe in February 2013, my pictures were taken with an iPhone so they weren’t quite as clear and nice as I would have liked. I’ve been remaking all my old first year blog recipes because the pictures were so poor.
I decided to make this recipe (January 2017) for our church’s Disciple Now weekend. I was cooking for a home with freshman high school girls and I thought they would enjoy this scrumptious recipe. I wasn’t wrong. I heard back that they loved all of my treats.
I have been wanting to remake this recipe for over a year now, but M&M’s no longer makes the cherry-flavored chocolate M&M’s anymore. 🙁 Not even for Christmas or Valentine’s Day. (Bummer!) So I decided to change it up a little bit and use the Valentine color M&M’s (red, pink, rose and white colors), and add a tiny bit of cherry extract to get the cherry flavor that the original batch had.
If you are lucky enough to find cherry-flavored chocolate M&M’s then you can eliminate the cherry flavoring, but I wasn’t able to locate them. Even still, these brownies turned out quite mouthwatering. Red Velvet Cherry Chocolate Brownies are certainly worth adding to any holiday party–whether for Christmas, New Years, or Valentine’s Day. Enjoy.
Red Velvet Cherry Chocolate Brownies are rich and decadent.
These luscious Red Velvet Cherry Chocolate Brownies are oh, so amazing, chewy and delectable!
These brownies are so quick and easy to make, too. The brownie only has only 5 ingredients and the icing consists of only 4 ingredients. It’s super easy starting with a red velvet cake mix. You can have the brownie portion whipped up in about 5 minutes. The icing doesn’t take much more time than that to make either.
Here’s what I did.
I used these ingredients for the brownie layer.
Place the red velvet cake mix into a bowl. Add eggs, melted butter, cherry extract and a bag of Valentine color M&M’s.
Mix all the ingredients together with a wooden spoon.
Spray a 9×13″ baking dish with cooking spray. Spread red velvet mixture into baking pan.
Bake at 350 about 20 minutes until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Allow brownies to cool.
I used these ingredients for the icing, plus water.
While brownies are cooling, mix up chocolate icing. Measure out cocoa and powdered sugar in a medium sized mixing bowl. Stir together. Add vanilla. Then add water a tablespoon at a time to get the right spreading consistency. This is somewhere between 2 and 4 tablespoons water. (I used two tablespoons water). Whisk mixture. You can see the thickness of the icing from this picture.
Spoon chocolate glaze into a plastic bag. Cut off the tip of the bag. Press chocolate mixture down to the point where the tip was cut and pipe chocolate glaze over top of the brownies. I iced in diagonals, but you can choose any style that suits you.
Red Velvet Cherry Chocolate Brownies are a chocolate-lover’s delight! These dense brownies are thick and chewy and so rich and chocolaty.
You better try one of these now before they’re all gone!
These are great treats for Valentine’s Day.

Red velvet is one of my favorite flavors! The way you combine it though with the cherry and the chocolate really tops it off, I have to say they look quite amazing

Wonderful! I found the cherry flavored M&Ms at Wal-Mart on the Valentine’s Day candy aisle. They had several different kinds. If you really want amazing use a whole bag of M&Ms in the brownie and another bag or half bag on top!

I love it when I see well worn bakeware. They may not be shiny anymore, but the scars and scraches tell of great dishes that came before. I also use extra red velvet cake mix to make whoopie pies. 🙂

Yes, these old pans were given to me by my mom back in the mid 70s and they weren’t new at the time, so yes, with almost 34 years of Christmas Cookie Extravaganzas and so many other times I’ve baked cookies and other stuff in these pans they have seen a lot of duty over the years.
