I had a bunch of beef stir-fry meat in my freezer that I was trying to use up so I got on Pinterest and started searching through stir-fry recipes to see what I could come up with that sounded good. I found this wonderful recipe and I was so glad I gave it a try! In fact, if you like Asian or Sri Lankan-style food you will love digging through the archives on this website. There is SO much too choose from.
My husband and I both loved the taste of the sauce. It’s composed of orange marmalade, soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice wine vinegar, and beef broth. I wasn’t planning on purchasing oyster sauce originally since I rarely use that ingredient, but it wasn’t excessively expensive at the store so I figured I’d give it a shot. Once I opened up the bottle to smell it, I recognized immediately that it is used in LOTS of Chinese food that I eat regularly at Chinese buffets, so I was no longer alarmed at this strange ingredient–even though I don’t care for oysters.
I changed the ingredients up a little bit by substituting rice wine vinegar for rice wine, adding sugar snap peas and mandarin orange segments, and green onions for garnish. We really enjoyed the way this recipe turned out, but let me give you a few suggestions if you’re not used to making stir fries very often. First, find very thinly sliced beef at the grocery store. It cooks so much easier than trying to slice the beef as thin as it needs to be. It needs to be fork-tender.
Second, pre-cook, parboil, or microwave the carrots until they are almost done before adding them to this recipe. Otherwise, carrots cook so slowly they will be hard and all the other veggies overcooked. Third, don’t cook or stir the mandarin orange segments into the stir fry. They will fall apart if you do that. Instead, use them as garnish. The heat from the stir-fry will warm them up when you are ready to serve anyway. Fourth, when you remove the beef to paper towels, the sesame seeds will begin popping. Be careful you don’t get burned when you try to remove them from the skillet/wok and begin cooking the veggies.
If you’re looking for an incredibly tasty beef stir-fry dish, then consider trying out Orange Sesame Beef sometime soon. Whether you use my additions or go back to the original recipe, you will find this beef entree extraordinary. If you enjoy Asian foods at all, this one is worth a try. I liked the sauce so much I’m going to use it with other stir fries in the future!
I originally posted this recipe in September 2013. I figured this recipe was due for an update so I recently remade this recipe (March 2018) and took some fresh pictures. This time I scrapped the mandarin orange segments completely and just garnished the dish with fresh navel orange slices. I hosted my son and his girlfriend for dinner and this recipe was perfect for all four of us. My oldest son loves Asian food, so this was a win-win for everyone. We enjoyed Orange Sesame Beef along with Easy Baked Rice, my Winter Fruit Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing and a Gluten Free Blueberry Cobbler with a scoop of Blue Bell ice cream. Yes, it was delightful meal we salivated over for quite some time. 🙂
Orange Sesame Beef is a wonderful and tasty stir-fry dish.
The beef is augmented by an orange marmalade sauce to infuse a wonderful orangey flavor.
We found the orange marmalade sauce to be extraordinary!
Orange Sesame Beef is a delicious way to get your fruits and veggies!
Here’s what I did.
I used these ingredients for the stir fry.
Before you get started, peel and slice the carrots. Microwave them on high for about 5 minutes while you’re stir-frying the beef.
Salt and pepper the beef. If you purchase it already pre-cut in narrow slices it makes this recipe so much easier.
In a large heavy-duty cast-iron skillet or wok, add avocado oil and heat to medium to medium-high heat. Add strips of beef and begin browning. Add sesame seeds and continue cooking.
Remove meat to a separate paper-towel-lined plate. Add a little more avocado oil if needed to skillet. Add freshly grated ginger and minced garlic. Saute a minute or two.
Add broccoli cut up in small florets, sugar snap peas and the microwaved carrots.
Stir to combine and saute a few minutes until veggies are tender but not overcooked.
I used these ingredients to make up the sauce.
Place orange marmalade in a mixing bowl. Add soy sauce.
Add remaining ingredients (EXCEPT cornstarch and water) and stir to combine.
Add the beef and sesame seeds back into the skillet.
Mix up all the Orange Marmalade Sauce ingredients except the cornstarch and water. Add the sauce to the ingredients.
Cook all the ingredients with the sauce about five minutes so the sauce infuses all the meat and veggies with orange flavor. Add drained, sliced water chestnuts.
Combine cornstarch and water.
Add the combined cornstarch and water to the beef mixture to thicken the sauce. Stir to combine.
Once the sauce has thickened, garnish with fresh naval orange slices and serve over hot, cooked rice.
This delightful entree is sumptuous and mouthwatering.
To serve: ladle out steamed, cooked rice on plates, place Orange Sesame Beef on top. Sprinkle with additional sesame seeds and garnish with sliced green onions, as desired.
Here I’ve garnished the Orange Sesame Beef with the mandarin orange segments, sesame seeds, and sliced green onions.
