Apple Butter Bread

Teresa Ambra
Apple Butter Bread is fantastic. This is a delicious bread for the breadmaker using Apple Butter, allspice and honey. You can also substitute apple pie spice for the allspice in the recipe if you have it on hand. It's excellent for a weekend, company or holiday breakfast. Serve it with Apple Butter and everyone will rave over it! This recipe makes a 2-lb. loaf.

Equipment

  • 1 breadmaker for a 2-pound loaf
  • 1 electric knife preferred, or sharp bread knife to cut bread
  • 1 pastry brush to brush the top and sides of butter after it's baked
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup 2% milk
  • 1/2 cup apple butter
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp. honey
  • 4 cups bread flour don’t use all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. salt or sea salt
  • 3/4 tsp. allspice or apple pie spice
  • 2 tsp. bread machine yeast
  • 4 tsp. vital wheat gluten

Instructions

  • Layer in bread canister in order given.
  • Place on normal bread setting.
  • Mine takes 3 hours 50 minutes.
  • Allow bread to sit in canister 15 minutes before removing.
  • Butter tops and sides of bread to prevent crust from hardening.
  • Cool bread 15 minutes longer.
  • Slice down into 20 half slices or 10 large slices.

Notes

NOTE: Be sure to check your yeast for an expiration date and make sure it hasn't expired!

NOTE: Homemade bread has no preservatives so it needs to be refrigerated after 2 days.

NOTE: all-purpose flour does not contain the necessary gluten to bond the ingredients together as well as bread flour. The bread may turn out crumbly. For best results use bread flour.

NOTE: I recommend using Fleischmann's yeast or bread machine yeast in any yeast bread recipe. Red Star yeast just doesn't work as well.
