Apple Pie French Toast

Absolutely delectable French toast recipe using an apple topping that's like eating apple pie! It's terrific for weekend, company or holiday breakfasts, like Mother's Day or Father's Day. Our company raves over this breakfast entree whenever we make it. Best breakfast comfort food ever!

Equipment

  • 1 large skillet or griddle
  • 1 sharp knife to peel, core and cut apples
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons

Ingredients
  

APPLE PIE FILLING:

  • 2 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 6 large gala apples peeled, sliced or diced
  • 2 tbsp. brown sugar packed
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. ground ginger

FRENCH TOAST:

  • 2 cups 2% milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp. butter or, as needed
  • 20 slices Sourdough bread (or any kind you prefer)
  • 1 cup maple syrup if desired

Instructions
 

APPLE PIE FILLING:

  • In a large skillet melt butter.
  • Add apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves and sauté until soft and tender about 5-10 minutes.
  • Set aside but keep warm.

FRENCH TOAST:

  • In a large mixing bowl add milk, eggs, cinnamon and vanilla.
  • Whisk to combine.
  • Melt butter, as needed, over griddle or large skillet.
  • Submerge each bread slice in milk mixture about 15-20 seconds.
  • Drain off excess and place bread in skillet.
  • Fry bread about 5 minutes per side; flip bread over, fry remaining side until all the bread is used up.
  • Serve bread whole or cut on the diagonal.
  • Spread apple pie filling over top of each piece of French toast.
  • Glaze with maple syrup, if desired.
