Bird's Nest Pie is actually an apple upside-down-cake dessert in disguise! The shape of the dessert reminds one of a Bird's Nest, resulting in the name of this scrumptious apple dessert. This is an easy 9-ingredient recipe that your kids will enjoy whipping up. The recipe makes two delicious "pies," so it's great to whip up for a crowd or company.
Divide apples evenly between the two pie plates; set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, cream of tartar, sour milk and egg.
Mix well.
Dollop and spread half of the batter over top of each pie.
Bake at 350º for 25-30 minutes or until pies are lightly browned and apples test done.
Invert pie plates onto a serving plate.
Apples will be on top.
TOPPING:
Combine topping ingredients in a small bowl.
Sprinkle half of the topping ingredients over each pie.
Serve warm (with ice cream, if desired).
Yield: each pie yields 6 servings; 12 total servings.
Notes
NOTE:To make soured milk: Add one tablespoon vinegar into a measuring cup. Add milk or half-and-half to measure one cup. Allow to sit out on counter for about 5 minutes before using in recipe.NOTE: I baked the pies for 35 minutes.

NOTE: Taste of Home no longer has a search engine that allows you to search recipes by title. Most of the time, you have to weed through thousands of recipes in collections. If any link is to be found, I find direct links through google, not their own website. I could not locate a direct page for this recipe. But it is in the cookbook noted above.
