Equipment

  • 1 hamburger chopper to cut meat down in small pieces while frying
  • 1 large skillet
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • 1 medium mixing bowl
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 1 pastry blender

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. bulk pork sausage
  • 1 unbaked deep dish pie shell
  • 1 can apple pie filling
  • 4 oz. sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar firmly packed
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (I prefer unbleached flour)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter cold (1/2 stick)
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  • Cook sausage until well done.
  • Use a hamburger chopper to cut down meat in small pieces while frying.
  • Drain on paper towels.
  • Prick unbaked pie shell with fork.
  • Sprinkle sausage on bottom of crust, top with pie filling, then cheese, then brown sugar.
  • Combine flour, butter and sugar in a medium mixing bowl; use a pastry blender to work butter into the mixture until coarse crumbs form.
  • Sprinkle this flour mixture over top of the brown sugar.
  • Bake at 350° for about 30-40 minutes or until done and lightly browned on top.
  • Serve warm.

Notes

NOTE: The ingredients for the streusel topping (1 cup flour, ½ stick butter and 1/3 cup granulated sugar) will work in a regular 10-inch deep dish pie plate. (When you’re making your own crust). It is too much topping for the unbaked shells purchased at the grocery. You may want to spread only about half of the ingredients over top.

NOTE: My favorite ratio for the topping is a little different. I prefer ½ cup flour, ¼ cup (1/2 stick butter) and 1/3 cup granulated sugar. This provides ample topping without being too dry or too much filling.
