Cherry Dump Cake Cobbler

Teresa Ambra

Cherry Dump Cake Cobbler has always been one of our favorite desserts. Dump Cakes are fabulous-tasting desserts that take about 5 minutes to prepare, under an hour to bake, and soon you will have a dessert your whole family will enjoy. It’s really more of a cobbler than a cake. Dump cakes by their definition are so easy because you don’t have to stir them. You layer the ingredients instead.

This delicious recipe includes a couple of cans of cherry pie filling, crushed pineapple, chopped walnuts and coconut which makes it extra sweet. A plain box cake mix on top of the ingredients and a couple of sticks of melted butter poured over the top, bake into the cobbler giving it a nice top crust. I’ve called this Cherry Dump Cake Cobbler to more reflect the ingredients.

The first time I tasted a dump cake was in September 1978 for a Labor Day party John and I attended with our church. We were busy playing softball when one of the ladies brought this dessert and set it up on the large picnic table with lots of other home baked goods.

Hers featured apple and peach pie filling with cinnamon sprinkled on top of the fruit. I think she skipped the coconut but the rest remained the same. The flavors were amazing. I’ve never forgotten how good it tasted.

This particular recipe with cherry pie filling was the first dump cake recipe I actually ever collected (I think around 1980), but I make dump cakes now with any combination of fruit – usually at least 3 cans of assorted fruit, and with any type of nuts.

I always include coconut in my recipes, and because this recipe had 2 sticks of butter in the ingredients, I’ve used 2 sticks of melted butter poured over the dry cake mix ever since–even though most people have cut this down to 1/2 to 1 stick.

I got this recipe from Debbie Porter when we attended church together in Florida, but I have no idea who originated the recipe. It has been on the Internet for years and before that it was passed around from recipe card to recipe card! Actually the recipe Debbie gave me called for two cans of tart red cherries but I’ve found it easier to use pie filling over the years although it does make the dessert sweeter.

You can’t go wrong with this basic recipe and any kind of pie filling and fruit combinations. If you’re looking for quick and easy this is the recipe to choose!

When I initially published this recipe in July 2012, I was using an iPhone 3 camera. Not so good, I know, but it is what it had. I happened to be looking through my recipes and realized I hadn’t updated the pictures in ten years! So I remade the recipe (circa September 2022) and it was such a hit with everyone. Plus, it only uses 6 ingredients. This vintage recipe is all you can ask for in a dessert!

I bake dump cakes at 350 degrees until the top starts to brown a little and the fruit starts bubbling up to the surface. This usually takes between 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much stuff I put in them.

How big are the cans sizes for the cherry pie filling in the pineapple are they 15 ounce?

    1. Teresa

      June 19, 2019 at 12:46 pm

Hi, Dominique. Cherry Pie Filling is usually 21 ounces. The pineapple ranges from 15-21 ounces. I would not go under those amounts or you won’t have enough fruit. But you can go over those amounts and it will still turn out terrific.

Can these Cobblers be made without the pineapple and coconut? They sound great and really easy but I’d prefer them without the pineapple and coconut if at all possible. Please let me know if you don’t mind. Thank you!

Yes, Wanda, you can make it without the pineapple and coconut. I would use 3 cans of cherry pie filling if you’re not going to use pineapple.

[…] This cobbler was amazing. Not only that, I used a gluten free yellow cake mix! If you’re familiar with dump cakes this recipe follows that tradition. I poured three cans of strawberry pie filling into a baking dish (pie filling was also gluten free). Then I topped the pie filling with walnuts and coconut, followed by dry cake mix. Then I melted two sticks of butter and drizzled it over the top. Bake for about an hour and you have a wonderful cobbler-type dessert. […]
