This Artichoke Hummus recipe is wonderful! It has hot sauce in the ingredients so it has a nice bit of heat. Then when you add the artichokes it just blends and mellows out all the flavors in an amazing way. I didn’t get a chance to eat as much of it as I would have liked, but the few bites I ate were absolutely delicious! I served it to a lot of people–young kids, senior adults and every age in between.

Everyone LOVED Artichoke Hummus and I think they were a little surprised that it was so tasty. Some had never eaten artichokes before. Some had never tried hummus of any kind before. Others were ranch dip addicts and won’t eat anything but that. Yet they loved this dip served with crackers, pita chips, and the vegetable dippers.

A couple of weeks ago I was looking for hummus recipes to serve with veggie trays. We were having a large brunch for our Vacation Bible School workers at church each day last week and I was providing the food. So I began looking for tasty and healthy ways to serve veggies. I didn’t want to make recipes I’d already made, instead, I wanted to try some new stuff. The Internet is wonderful for finding new recipes!

I looked through several blogs that used The Barefoot Contessa’s recipe for hummus declaring that it was wonderful. Then I stumbled across another blog that had all different kinds of hummus recipes which is where I came across the idea for Artichoke Hummus. I decided to use Ina Garten’s Hummus recipe (mostly) with a tweak–I added a can of quartered artichokes to the mix.

It was so incredible even the teenagers and kids I served this too loved it! Now, remember, I live in Texas where most people love spicy, so they loved the hot sauce in the Artichoke Hummus. But I think even people who don’t grow up eating anything with hot sauce or diced chilies will love this amazing dip.

If you’re looking for a wonderful tasting hummus recipe and you’re tired of making the same kind each time, then consider my Artichoke Hummus recipe some time. It is perfect for veggie platters and providing finger foods for parties or company.

It’s a great snack to eat while watching sporting events since it’s so easy to make, low calorie, and filled with healthy ingredients. It’s also a great after school snack for kids if you’re trying to teach them good eating habits and they won’t get sugar highs!  Your family doesn’t even have to know it’s good for them! 🙂 Artichoke Hummus is a great appetizer to help you get your quota of fresh veggies every day, too!

When I initially published this recipe in August 2013, the pictures were taken late in the day so they had a golden-orange hue. I recently remade this recipe (July 2017) for our Friday night care group. Because the recipe made so much, I also took it a couple days later to serve for lunch with a friend. It’s a perfect appetizer any time of the year. I do recommend rinsing the artichokes before using in this recipe. Even artichokes that aren’t marinated have a strong flavor from the canning process. Enjoy.

Hot sauce in the recipe gives this hummus a little extra kick that is wonderful. Artichoke Hummus is a fabulous dip. Even the young kids I served this to loved the taste and texture of this recipe.

Before draining the chick peas, measure out about 4-5 tbsp. of the water the chick peas come in and place in blender or food processor. Mash chick peas on a plate with a fork. Add to blender.

Add lemon juice, sesame tahini (ground sesame seeds), chopped garlic, sea salt, rinsed and drained artichoke hearts and eight drops of hot sauce.

Blend in blender at high speed or in food processor until well mixed. You may have to stop every now and then and stir with a wooden spoon. Then continue pulsing.

  • 1 blender
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 1 sharp knife to mince garlic
  • 1 plate
  • 1 fork

Ingredients
  

  • 15 oz. can garbanzo beans reserve 4-5 tbsp. liquid from can
  • 1/3 cup tahini sesame paste
  • 6 tbsp. lemon juice or the juice from two lemons
  • 8 drops hot sauce
  • 1 1/2 tsp. sea salt or kosher salt
  • 14.5 oz. can quartered artichoke hearts rinsed and drained
  • 4 cloves garlic minced or sliced

Instructions
 

  • Drain garbanzo beans reserving liquid.
  • Place beans on a plate and mash with a fork.
  • Place all the ingredients in a blender or food processor and process until smooth.
  • Be sure to add a few tablespoons of liquid from the garbanzo bean can.
  • You may have to stop and stir ingredients with a wooden spoon in order to keep pulsing with the blender.
  • Makes about 2 cups.

Notes

NOTE: For a smoother, creamier texture, mash garbanzo beans with a fork before adding them to your blender or food processor.
 
 
NOTE: Most hummus recipes use olive oil. If you prefer your hummus with olive oil, add a tablespoon when processing in blender.
