Basic White Bread

Teresa Ambra

Basic White Bread is absolutely delightful. It’s a lovely breadmaker bread and the very first recipe I ever made in my breadmaker. It is truly a Basic White Bread. Nothing fancy and no frills, but still very tasty nonetheless. It’s wonderful hot out of the breadmaker!

Making bread in the breadmaker is just so E-A-S-Y, too! You toss in the ingredients, set the bread setting, push the button, and voila! In a few hours your have a tasty loaf of hot bread ready to devour.

I remember when I first got my breadmaker. I was very timid about trying it out (as I am with all new-fangled things!). after purchasing the ingredients, I finally decided to give Black and Decker’s basic recipe and my new breadmaker a try. I’m so glad I did.

This recipe has gotten a lot of use over the years. I have served it for company more times than I can count. I could always count on this recipe turning out well. It always raised properly, never fell and was not too dense or heavy. It had a nice rounded top, and had that delightful homemade bread taste.

I love to send a loaf of homemade bread with a home-cooked meal I’m preparing for others. This one has been on the menu a whole lot of times. It’s always dependable and turns out with a great texture. Plus, it’s so quick and easy, and because it’s really economical.

Most people are so impressed when you give a loaf of homemade bread to them. Even if it is just made in the breadmaker. I made this one a couple of weeks ago for our new neighbors across the street. I made it to go along with Jamie Deen’s recipe for Spaghetti and Meatballs in Pepperoni Sauce. I cut the loaf down and sent most of it to our neighbors. Fortunately, I saved out a few choice slices for me! You can see them in the pictures for that recipe.

If you’re looking for a simple, basic recipe for white bread this recipe is top-notch! We’ve always had great success with this recipe.  Basic White Bread makes up about 24-25 half slices as this recipe provides the ingredients for a 2-lb. breadmaker. If you want simplicity–this recipe is it in a nutshell!

Don’t forget, never use all purpose flour when baking breads, they never have enough gluten so they get crumbly very easily. Always use bread flour and/or whole wheat/spelt/rye or other grains if you want to ensure a great finished product.

Add shortening. (You can use oil if you prefer to stay away from hydrogenated oils). Add sugar, salt and bread flour. NOT all-purpose flour.

Add bread machine yeast.

Place on regular bread setting in your breadmaker and bake. Mine takes 3 hours 50 minutes.

Allow bread to cool about 10-15 minutes before removing bread canister. Butter tops and sides of bread with butter so crusts don’t harden.

Allow bread to cool another 15 minutes before cutting in half, and then slicing down in slices. An electric knife makes quick work of the slicing process and you don’t hack the bread all up which will happen if you use a serrated knife on hot bread.

To serve: Serve bread with butter or plain. You can also top with your favorite jams, preserves, apple butter, or honey! The texture of this bread comes out so nicely.

This bread rises exceptionally well — it usually provides between 22-25 half slices like you see in the above picture.

Equipment

  • 1 breadmaker for 2-pound loaf
  • measuring bowls
  • measuring cups
  • 1 pastry brush to brush the bread with butter after bread bakes
  • 1 electric knife preferred, or sharp bread knife to cut bread in slices

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups hot water
  • 2 tbsp. powdered milk
  • 2 tbsp. Crisco shortening
  • 1 tbsp. granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. sea salt or kosher salt
  • 4 1/4 cups bread flour NOT all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp. bread-maker yeast

Instructions

  • Measure ingredients in the order listed into breadmaker baking pan.
  • This recipe is for a basic bread setting and cooks for 3 hours and 50 minutes in my breadmaker.
  • You must have a 2-lb. size breadmaker to make this bread.
  • Allow bread to cool about 15 minutes before removing from breadmaker.
  • Butter top and sides of bread to prevent crusts from hardening.
  • Wait 15 more minutes before slicing bread down with an electric knife (if you have one).
  • About 25 half-slices.

Notes

NOTE: Homemade bread has no preservatives so it needs to be refrigerated after 2 days.

NOTE: All-purpose flour doesn't contain enough gluten. The bread tends to come out very dry and crumbly.

NOTE: I recommend using Fleischmann's yeast or bread machine yeast in any yeast bread recipe. Red Star yeast just doesn't work as well.
