Raisin Bread | Can't Stay Out of the Kitchen

Raisin Bread

Teresa Ambra

Raisin Bread is a delightful yeast bread recipe I found in my breadmaker cookbook. It’s so simple that it only takes about 5 minutes to prepare and the breadmaker does the rest. With the exception of raisins, it uses all the typical ingredients found in any breadmaker recipe. I happened to have everything in my pantry already, so when I made this bread it didn’t cost me anything extra to make it. It’s really an economical bread recipe, too, with the ease of using a breadmaker instead of kneading by hand.

We had some friends in our Sunday school class move a few weeks back. John volunteered to help with the moving and lifting part, and I volunteered to bring them a hot meal. After all, who wants to be in the kitchen cooking when you’ve been moving furniture and boxes all day??? 🙁

They asked for a healthy meal so I pulled together Baked Turkey Cutlet Parmesan, Cinnamon Spaghetti Squash, a salad with homemade Healthy Orange Balsamic Salad Dressing, and a huge Fresh Fruit Salad to serve for breakfast the next day. I also brought Paprika Hummus Dip with lots of fresh veggies to serve as they munched while busy unpacking.

I asked if they would eat dessert and they said they’d been trying to stay off a lot of extra refined sugars, so I acquiesced and laid off making a dessert….very hard for me, but I survived. 😉 Then I asked them if they would eat a loaf of homemade bread. Boy, did I get takers for that! Yes, they would eat homemade bread. So I made up a batch of this Raisin Bread for them, in lieu of dessert. Everything was a big hit.

If you’re looking for an easy Raisin Bread yeast recipe (rather than a sweetbread) that’s made for the breadmaker, this is a great one. Quick, easy, delicious. My kind of recipe.

Layer all the ingredients into the breadmaker in order listed EXCEPT the raisins. Start breadmaker on regular bread machine cycle. At the beep (about 45 minutes later) add raisins. Close lid and continue baking until done.

Allow bread to cool in canister 15 minutes before removing from breadmaker. Brush butter over top of bread to prevent the crusts from hardening. Allow bread to cool 15 more minutes before slicing down.

Equipment

  • 1 breadmaker
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • 1 pastry brush to brush bread with butter after baking
  • 1 electric knife preferred, or sharp bread knife to slice down bread

Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 cups water
  • 4 1/4 cups bread flour NOT all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp. granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp. dry milk powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 1/2 tbsp. unsalted butter cut in slivers
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 1/2 tsp. Fleishmann's bread machine yeast
  • 1 cup raisins separate before adding

Instructions

  • Layer ingredients in bread canister in order listed, except the raisins.
  • Start breadmaker on regular basic bread setting.
  • At the sound of the beep, add raisins.
  • Close lid and continue to bake until done.
  • Allow bread to sit in breadmaker 15 minutes before removing.
  • Spread top and sides of bread with butter to prevent the crust from hardening.
  • Allow bread to rest 15 minutes before slicing down.

Notes

NOTE: It normally takes about 45 minutes for the beeper to go off on the breadmaker so you can add the raisins.

NOTE: Homemade bread has no preservatives to it needs to be refrigerated after 2 days.

NOTE: all-purpose flour does not contain the necessary gluten to bond the ingredients together as well as bread flour. The bread may turn out crumbly. For best results use bread flour.

NOTE: I recommend using Fleischmann's yeast or bread machine yeast in any yeast bread recipe. Red Star yeast just doesn't work as well.
