Sunflower Walnut Bread

Teresa Ambra
Sunflower Walnut Bread is irresistible. This delicious homemade bread recipe features walnuts and sunflower seeds for a nice, crunchy texture. Because it's made in the breadmaker it's incredibly easy. Terrific home-baked bread for a company or holiday breakfast or dinner menu.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 cups hot water
  • 2 tbsp. powdered milk
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil or avocado oil, or walnut oil
  • 3 tbsp. honey
  • 1 1/2 tsp. sea salt or kosher salt
  • 3 3/4 cups bread flour NOT all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sunflower seed kernels
  • 1/3 cup walnuts finely diced
  • 1 1/2 tsp. bread machine yeast
  • 2 tsp. vital wheat gluten

Instructions

  • Layer ingredients in bread canister in order listed.
  • Bake on regular bread cycle.
  • Allow bread to rest 15 minutes after the cycle is completed, then brush the top and sides with butter to prevent the crusts from hardening.
  • Allow bread to rest an additional 15 minutes before slicing down into slices. 14 large slices or 28 half slices. Makes a two-pound loaf.

Notes

NOTE: This bread has no preservatives so you will need to refrigerate it after a few days to prevent mold.
NOTE: all-purpose flour does not contain the necessary gluten to bond the ingredients together as well as bread flour. The bread may turn out crumbly. For best results use bread flour.
NOTE: I recommend using Fleischmann's yeast or bread machine yeast in any yeast bread recipe. Red Star yeast just doesn't work as well.
