Classic Spinach Dip

Teresa Ambra

You can’t go wrong with this fabulous Classic Spinach Dip recipe. It’s quick and easy and presents beautifully in a pumpernickel bread bowl. I use the excess bread for dippers along with Ritz crackers or other whole-grain crackers.

This stuff is addictive! I have made this recipe so many times for parties and company. It is always wonderfully received–even by those who aren’t usually keen on spinach. It has a sensational taste and the water chestnuts give it a nice crunch.

This is another one of the recipes I collected from Mimi Pownall when she served it at a potluck at our church. She’s the one who taught me to save the cut bread and use it to spread the dip on. Even though Mimi gave me the recipe, it is the recipe from the back of the Knorr’s vegetable soup mix box. Knorr’s is the creator of this recipe. You can access Knorr’s website for other recipes.

I first published this recipe in July 2012 in the first few weeks of starting my blog. I knew nothing about blogging or camera work back then. As a consequence, the pictures were of poor quality and not very appetizing.

It’s been over two years since I originally made this recipe. Here are some new pictures so you can have a better idea of how this recipe looks (August 2014). I actually served it in a sourdough bread bowl this time, but I took the pictures the day before I served it for a big gathering and didn’t want to soak the bread over night with the dip inside it. So, here is the dip served from a regular dip bowl instead.

If you’re looking for a fantastic dip for tailgating parties or the next time you get together with company, give this amazing recipe a try. Your bowl will be cleaned out to the last drop.

Doesn’t Classic Spinach Dip look wonderful? It tastes heavenly. I like to cut the bread from the bread bowl I serve it in, into cubes and serve them as dippers, too.

Classic Spinach Dip is delectable on top of the crackers. Especially Wheat Thins. It’s also great with any kind of veggie dipper if you’re trying to increase your veggie intake.

Here’s what I did.

Thaw spinach. Wring it out really well. I pressed the water out of it through a colander and then found there was still too much liquid. So I squeezed handfuls of the spinach in my hands until all the liquid was drained out of it. Add sour cream, mayonnaise, green onions, and drained water chestnuts.

Pour mixture into serving bowl and serve with crackers, veggie dippers or bread cubes from cutting up a bread bowl and hollowing out the center.

I would suggest you not to advertise this as a gluten free recipe considering knorr vegetable soup mix contains gluten that is clearly listed in the indgredients in the form of barley.

Hi, Laura, when I looked at the ingredients the last time I made this I thought it used cornstarch. I don’t remember seeing the barley. I will check it again. Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention.

I want to make this and I was wondering how long it stays fresh in an air tight container in the fridge.

Hi, Carol. I think it will stay fresh for several days in the refrigerator. I usually make this the day before I need it and I’ve eaten up to two or three days after I’ve served it. I hope you enjoy it. The recipe is so easy and delicious!

I have made this recipe from Knorrs for so many years and always used the frozen spinach, until the last few years that is. Living out here in Indiana I started growing my own vegetables and spinach was one of them. Now I use fresh spinach instead….it’s amazing the difference in taste….it’s wonderful.

      Hello flyfishbrat

How do you use the fresh spinach? i.e., do you blance the spinach?

      thanks

I’ve never used this with fresh spinach before. I think you probably would have to blanch the spinach before using it.
