Thousand Island Salad Dressing

2013 – Gluten Free Living

This is a fantastic Thousand Island Salad Dressing recipe! Years ago I found this recipe in a Taste of Home magazine and knew I wanted to try it. I set the recipe aside for YEARS before finally getting around to trying it. When I did I was amazed by the taste and texture.

Follow Me On Instagram!

On top of that it has just a handful of ingredients. The only thing that takes a little time is hard boiling the two eggs. If you’ve already hard boiled some eggs for other purposes and can snag two from another batch so much the better.

Yes, I know this isn’t as healthy as vinegar and oil, but I love Thousand Island Salad Dressing, and this Taste of Home recipe is a great alternative to store bought brands filled with high fructose corn syrup, MSG, and other garbage, although you will have to hunt for Chili Sauce and mayonnaise that doesn’t have any of that in it.

It’s very easy to make, so if you prefer making your own salad dressings this is one to add to your collection. To make this really healthy you will have to make your own mayonnaise (or Miracle Whip) and find a chili sauce (or make your own) that doesn’t have high fructose corn syrup in the ingredients. Even as it is, the recipe is delicious. You will love it served over salad if you like Thousand Island Salad Dressing.

When I originally posted this recipe in June 2012, it was right after I started my blog. I remade the recipe that first year and took better pictures, but they still weren’t taken with my Canon so they weren’t as nice as I would have liked.

I recently remade this recipe (February 2016) for a family that had a Leap Year baby! I served it with Vegan Pumpkin Soup with Leeks, Apples & Pears and Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Almond Bread since they have a child with gluten intolerance. I’ve included better pictures so you can see how delicious this salad dressing is to make. I’ve included the salad recipe as well, in case you want to repeat it, but this dressing can go on almost any combination of salad.

Get the eggs boiling right away. Cover eggs with water. Replace lid. Once water comes to a boil, reduce heat to low/medium and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat immediately and run cold water over eggs. Crack shell and remove. Peel and dice eggs, then add to a mixing bowl.

Measure out Miracle Whip and place in small mixing bowl. Add chili sauce, diced green onions, regular onions (Yes, this recipe uses both kinds of onions), salt and paprika.

    Hi,
Something went wrong i guess, i was still writing when it vanished.
I just have one question. Can i put this all together in a blender or food processor to make a smooth dressing wich i love?
I live in the Netherlands, Europe and the only thousand island dressing i can buy is smooth. I love that only the flavor is not right to my opinion.
That’s why i want to try yours.
Oh…one more question. Can i put some vinegar in the dressing? I like my dressings to be sour and tart. I like to eat sour food. Or do i destroy the flavor when i put some vinegar in it?
Thanks in advance for answering my questions.
Have a great day and who knows till next time?

Hi, Marja. Let me offer a few suggestions. First of all I would try the recipe as stated. Then if you don’t like it add the extra ingredients. The chili sauce in America is tart and has bite to it. So before you add vinegar you really need to try it this way first. Regarding the blender, why don’t you consider making it without blending it first. If you really don’t care for the texture, then pop it in the blender and puree until it’s the consistency you prefer. It really is a terrific dressing. I hope you enjoy it, no matter which way you make it. 🙂
