Butter Pecan Turtle Bars
Butter Pecan Turtle Bars are marvelous. Seriously, these luscious brownie-type bars are chocolaty and addictive. They’re also pretty easy to make. The bars have a shortbread crust. Then they’re topped with a layer of pecans. Butter and brown sugar is caramelized on top of the stove. Then it’s poured over the pecan layer. After that layer is baked you spread chocolate chips over top. The chocolate chips soften. Then they’re spread over top so they make an icing. Every bite of chocolate and pecans will have you drooling.

At the end of last year we finally cleaned out just about all of the cookies from our freezer. January rolled in and it was time to restock. I started looking through recipes to see if I could find any where I had all the ingredients on hand. I just didn’t feel like getting out to the store in the cold weather. Lazy, yes. It also didn’t hurt to use up stuff I already had on hand.
I found this recipe and decided to give it a try. I followed it pretty closely except when it came to the chocolate frosting on top. One cup of chocolate chips was not enough to cover the butter pecan layer fully. I increased the recipe to a full bag of chocolate chips and that made the difference. Truly, this recipe is sooo yummy.
A few weeks ago, one of our care group families had a son in the hospital. It was touch and go for awhile. He is now out of the hospital and healing up nicely. John took a container of these delicious cookies to them when they were in the hospital. They were very much appreciated.
Listen, if you want a scrumptious Turtle Bar recipe, give these Butter Pecan Turtle Bars a try. Now! They’re perfect for tailgating parties, soccer games, potlucks, baby showers or backyard barbecues. They’re also terrific for Christmas cookie exchanges or anytime you want something chocolate to drool over. Yep. That’s what I said. Prepare to DROOL….:)
Butter Pecan Turtle Bars are irresistibly good.
Prepare to lick your lips after every bite.
If you enjoy pecans with chocolate, you’ll love these bar-type cookies.
Here’s what I did.
I used these ingredients.
Soften part of the butter and place in a mixing bowl. Add part of the brown sugar and UNBLEACHED flour. Bleached flour toughens baked goods.
Mix ingredients with an electric mixer at low speed until crumbly. It will take about a minute or two to get the butter mixed into small enough pieces.
Press mixture into a greased 9×13″ glass baking dish.
Sprinkle pecans over crust layer.
In a small saucepan over medium heat, add remaining butter and remaining brown sugar.
Bring to a boil. Stir for one minute. Remove from heat.
Pour caramelized mixture over top of pecans in baking dish. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes or until boiled mixture has set.
Remove from oven and immediately top with chocolate chips.
Allow chocolate chips to soften about a minute before spreading with a narrow spatula.
Allow icing to set and bars to cool completely before cutting into individual pieces.
Butter Pecan Turtle Bars are wonderful for soccer games, backyard barbecues or tailgating parties.
These are also scrumptious for Christmas cookie exchanges and holiday parties.
The caramel-toffee layer in the middle is superb.
Here’s the recipe.

Hi, Mary. As I recall, the bars were a little on the crunchy side because of the pecans in the center. They were pretty mouthwatering. So glad you enjoy the blog, Mary. I try really hard to come up with new and varied recipes. Enjoy.
