Breakfast Sausage Apple Pie
Full disclosure: I LOVE Breakfast Sausage Apple Pie. It is my favorite breakfast pie ever. Sausage and apple pie filling is stuffed into a pie shell. It’s sprinkled with cheddar cheese, brown sugar and a streusel topping. The end result? Mouthwatering. If you enjoy savory and sweet together, this pie is for you. If you’ve never tried sausage and apple flavors together before, you don’t know what you’re missing.

I have had this recipe for over three decades. The original version called for sausage links. But that meant a lot of the pie didn’t have bites of sausage in it. I changed it to bulk sausage so it tasted more meaty that way. Now, let me give a disclaimer. If you make this in your own pie crust in a deep-dish 10-inch pie plate, you will use all the streusel. However, if you prefer a store-bought pie crust, you will only need about half of the streusel topping. It won’t fit into the pan otherwise.
We had Breakfast for Dinner for our Friday night care group back in early March. I served this delicious pie with Apple Pie French Toast and Funfetti Cake Donuts. Yes, we were all high on sugar that night. 🙂 And it certainly was a meal to remember.
I get that not everyone will love the combination of sausage and apples. But if you like a hearty, filling and satisfying breakfast option, Breakfast Sausage Apple Pie will do it. Except for donuts, this is my favorite comfort food. But then I’ve always liked pie. I enjoy savory versions just as much as sweeter ones. This is one of those recipes where I could actually eat the whole pie and be in seventh heaven. I could eat this pie until it’s coming out my ears. 🙂 Seriously. The different flavors and textures are awesome.
Give Breakfast Sausage Apple Pie a try the next time you make up a big country breakfast. It’s also great for holiday or brunch menus. You may find yourself going back for seconds and thirds. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Ha!
Breakfast Sausage Apple Pie is hearty, filling and so satisfying.
This breakfast pie is filled with sausage, apple pie filling and cheddar cheese.
Next to donuts, this is my comfort food of choice. Yum.
Here’s what I did.
I used these ingredients. However, I only used half of the sausage.
Fry sausage until no pink remains. Break down into small bite-sized bits.
Drain on paper towels.
Pierce bottom and sides of unbaked pie shell with a fork. This will prevent the pie shell from shrinking while baking.
Pour crumbled, cooked sausage into unbaked pie shell.
Smooth a can of apple pie filling over top of the sausage.
Sprinkle with Cheddar Cheese.
Sprinkle with brown sugar.
Combine flour with sugar. Add cold butter. Cut in butter with pastry blender.
Cut in butter with pastry blender until coarse crumbs form.
If you’re using a store-bought pastry shell, sprinkle only about half of the topping over top. Otherwise, in a regular deep-dish 10-inch pie shell, all of the topping will fit. (See my note at the bottom of the recipe card for my favorite ratio on the streusel topping).
Bake at 350 about 30-40 minutes or until done.
Serve!
Every bite of Breakfast Sausage Apple Pie is delectable.
This savory pie is wonderful for weekend, company or holiday breakfasts.
I served this for “Breakfast for Dinner.” It’s so savory and delicious.
The combination of sausage with apples and cheese is so mouthwatering.

Hi, Mona, I’ve been sick with the flu and been down for the count for the past two days and didn’t see this until afterwards. Yes, you can make it any tine, but it certainly is better served warm. Enjoy.
