Cherry Meltaways
It’s that time of year again! Yes, time to roll out the cookies I’ve baked for this year’s Christmas Cookie Extravaganza. Cherry Meltaways are utterly irresistible. These lovely cookies have a “melt-in-your-mouth” dough that includes chopped candied cherries and almond extract. Then they’re rolled in powdered sugar before baking. Truly, these cookies seem to just dissolve in your mouth while eating. We loved them.

I was approached by Paradise Fruit Company to see if I was interested in making Christmas goodies with some of their products. I received their box of goodies at the end of September, just before we took our 16-day Hawaiian cruise. As soon as we got back in mid-October, I started the never-ending baking process. 🙂 I made 16 different kinds of cookies this year, but also made some muffins, scones, Cinnamon Rolls and donuts using candied fruits. Only four of the 16 different cookies were recipes I baked in the past.
Cherry Meltaways are a terrific cookie to bake up for the Christmas holidays. They’re festive and beautiful (of course), but they also have awesome taste and texture. As I stated earlier, these cookies just melt in your mouth! Each batch makes about 5 1/2 dozen so they’re perfect for larger parties and crowds. If you enjoy cherries, these cookies will be a dream come true!
Cherry Meltaways are fantastic!
These “Melt-in-Your-Mouth” type of cookies are filled with Candied Cherries.
Each batch makes about 5 1/2 dozen cookies, so there’s plenty for a crowd!
These cookies are great for tailgating parties this time of the year.
Here’s what I did.
I used these ingredients.
Soften butter and put it in a large mixing bowl. Add powdered sugar, granulated sugar, eggs and oil. (I was making four batches of the recipe, so pictures reflect larger amounts than a single batch.)
I soften butter by leaving it out on the counter over night.
Mix ingredients with an electric mixer until creamy.
Add baking soda, cream of tartar, sea salt and almond extract.
Mix again with an electric mixer until all the ingredients are well incorporated.
Add unbleached flour. Bleached flour toughens baked goods. Add chopped candied cherries.
Stir ingredients well to combine.
Roll dough into golf-ball sized balls.
Roll well in powdered sugar.
Place on greased cookie sheet pans.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 12-15 minutes. Rotate cookie sheets on oven racks after 7 minutes of baking time. My cookies took 17 minutes to bake completely.
After the cookies cool, stack them up on trays and serve them to all of your guests!
Prepare yourself for hearing lots of ooooohhhhs and aaaaahhhhhs after one bite of these jewels.
Cherry Meltaways are a “melt-in-your-mouth” experience!
We received the candied cherries from Paradise Fruit Company.
Here’s the recipe.

It’s also great to hear that you were approached by the Paradise Fruit Company to make Christmas goodies with their products. It sounds like you had a lot of fun baking a variety of treats, including muffins, scones, cinnamon rolls, and donuts using candied fruits.

I made these this weekend and they are my new favorite cookie! Thanks for sharing the recipe! For those of you who have had issues with your cookies being too flat, or not flat enough, it probably has to do with your butter. Make sure the butter is soft (not melted, not cold, and not room temperature). I’ve never been very good at baking because I don’t like to measure ingredients, and it took me years to find out how important the consistency of butter can be. But if you follow this recipe exactly how it is given, you should be fine! I hope this helps!

So glad you enjoyed the recipe! They are also great with either vanilla chips or white chocolate chips for a little extra yum. 🙂
