Steaks with Peppery Onions

I think this is my new favorite way to cook steak! Steaks with Peppery Onions is a phenomenal recipe! It uses only a handful of ingredients but it’s so rich on flavor and deliciousness. I Love grilled onions and garlic anyway, but add them on top of a steak and I’m in seventh heaven. 🙂

I’ve been going through my old Taste of Home Cookbooks and recording recipes that I want to try out. (I’ve got thousands now!) Many of the healthier recipes (like this one) are strictly for me! We do a lot of grilling so we’ve been grilling a lot of meat, veggies and fruit. And it’s just so very easy. Other recipes I make for company or as meals for other families. I have been trying to make a few new recipes every week. I have really enjoyed many of these great family favorite recipes and others have too.
We grilled and made several things the day I made Steaks with Peppery Onions. We also made Steaks with a Savory Steak Rub, Grilled Herbed Broccoli (which we grilled), Garlic Parmesan Asparagus (also on the grill), along with Rutabaga Fries (in the oven) (which was fantastic and tasted like Sweet Potato Fries), and Garlic Mashed Turnips (on the stovetop) (and one of my new faves!) We also grilled peaches which was my dessert for the week.
It does take a little work converting a regular recipe to using the grill, but I’ve really wanted to try more veggies on the grill. For this recipe, however, we grilled the steaks and then sautéed the onions in a skillet and added them on top later. I was a little concerned initially about using a full teaspoon of black pepper when cooking the onions, but truthfully, I thought they turned out wonderfully well. You can always lower the amount if you desire, but I thought the onions were delightfully seasoned and just right as written.
If you’re looking for easy week-night dinner recipes, it doesn’t get any easier than this! Add some corn-on-the-cob and grill away! If you enjoy garlic and onions for flavor and texture, this is a terrific way to get these healthy veggies into your diet. In addition to being healthy and gluten free, this is a Keto-friendly recipe too. Enjoy!
Steaks with Peppery Onions was a fantastic main dish entree ! I served it with Garlic Mashed Turnips, Garlic Parmesan Asparagus, Grilled Herbed Broccoli and Grilled Peaches.
I just loved this recipe! The Sautéed Onions were fantastic and added so much to the flavor of the steak.
Grilling the Herbed Broccoli and Garlic Parmesan Asparagus was delicious. They were great side vegetables for the steaks.
Here’s what I did
I used these ingredients.
Season steaks with pepper before going on the grill.
Place steaks on the grill over a medium to medium-high heat.
Turn steaks over and grill to desired doneness: rare, medium rare, medium, or well-done. When the steaks are done, season with salt.
Meanwhile, as steaks are grilling, prepare onions. Slice three sweet onions or Vidalia onions.
Place olive oil and butter in skillet. Add onions and garlic.
Season onions with salt and pepper.
Continue stirring and turning onions over for about 15-20 minutes until onions are fork tender.
Here the onions are tender. Keep warm until serving with steaks.
Place steaks on a meat platter. Surround the outside edge with the Sautéed Onions. (Or you can smother the steaks with the onions if you prefer.)
Serve with your choice of vegetables and fruit! I served Steaks with Peppery Onions with Garlic Parmesan Asparagus, Grilled Herbed Broccoli, Garlic Mashed Turnips and Grilled Peaches.
Steaks with Peppery Onions were so mouthwatering. I could eat this weekly for dinner!
The steaks were juicy and sumptuous! The onions added more flavor and the peppery flavor was just right!

STEAKS WITH PEPPERY ONIONS

Steaks with Peppery Onions
Equipment
- 1 gas grill you can also use an electric grill or charcoal grill but time may vary
- 1 large skillet
- 1 sharp knife to cut onions
- 1 cutting board
- measuring spoons
- 1 serving platter
Ingredients
- 3 medium sweet onions or Vidalia onions, sliced thinly and separated into rings
- 1 tsp. garlic finely minced
- 1 tsp. sea salt
- 1 tsp. ground black pepper
- 2 tbsp. olive oil
- 1 tbsp. salted butter
- 24 ounces New York Strip steaks or boneless rib-eye steaks (four six-ounce steaks)
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the onions, garlic and seasonings in oil and butter mixture.
- Cook and stir frequently about 15-20 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown.
- Meanwhile, grill steaks on gas grill until you reach the desired doneness for rare, medium rare, medium or well done.
- Remove steaks to a serving platter.
- Garnish with onions.
- Serve.
