Fried Apples and Sausage is an old vintage recipe I’ve had for over 25 years. It’s easy to make and delightful for a big country-style or holiday breakfast. Plus, it includes only 4 ingredients, making it easy, easy, E-A-S-Y! The recipe is also gluten free for those who have gluten intolerance. Every bite is rich and savory.

A little over 26 years ago, we had some really close friends who wanted to do a send-off for us before we left Massachusetts and headed for Texas. They had us over for “breakfast for dinner” the night before we left. Carolyn made a Cheesy Scrambled Egg dish, Sausage Gravy and Biscuits, bacon, fresh fruit with homemade pastries, Fried Potatoes, Blueberry Muffins, Fried Apples and Sausage and several other things I can no longer remember. Our kids loved everything and they were very young teenage boys at the time.
She put on a spread for us that was unbelievable. Not only was everything delicious, but there must have been at least ten items to choose from. And yes, we chose EVERYTHING! We’ve never forgotten that delightful dinner menu or the company of our friends that we so enjoyed.
I have made this recipe a few times since then, but dragged it out of the archives to make for a “breakfast for dinner” I had in October for our Wednesday night community group. I served it with Hash Brown Potato Nests and Pecan Cinnamon Rolls. Everyone loved the little mini sausage balls. The syrup from the apples set the sausage off perfectly. I fry the apples in butter and then add a little sugar while the apples are frying. The ingredients break down into a syrup so that when the ingredients are tossed together with the miniature sausage balls, they’re coated in the syrup. The effect is unbelievably irresistible.
Fried Apples and Sausage is a delightful entree or side dish to add to your company or holiday breakfast menu. But it’s easy enough to make for regular breakfasts too. Your family will love it!
Fried Apples and Sausage is a wonderful breakfast entree.
The ingredients make up into a syrup while frying, which coat the apples and sausage. So delectable.
I served the Fried Apples and Sausage with Pecan Cinnamon Rolls and Hash Brown Potato Nests.
Here’s what I did.
I used these ingredients.
Pinch off the sausage and roll into miniature balls. Place in a large skillet and fry over low to medium heat.
Continue cooking sausage and turning the sausage balls over until all sides are cooked.
Remove the sausage balls to a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Set aside.
Clean out skillet and add butter. Add thinly sliced apple slices and saute.
Continue cooking and turning apples over to brown on the other side. Sprinkle with granulated sugar.
As the apples continue to cook, a syrup will form. Continue sauteing the apples until they are fork tender. (Try not to turn the apples after adding the sugar because they will be too fragile and break up too much.)
Add miniature sausage balls and heat through, stirring occasionally.
Serve with your favorite sides.

FRIED APPLES AND SAUSAGE
(Recipe adapted from Carolyn Allen, Millbury, MA)
Fried Apples and Sausage
Equipment
- 1 large skillet (Mine is 14")
- 1 plastic spatula
- 1 sharp paring knife to pare and slice apples
- 1 serving dish
Ingredients
- 1 pound mild, bulk pork sausage formed into miniature balls
- 2 to 3 tbsp. butter as needed
- 4 medium Gala apples peeled, cored and thinly sliced
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar (brown sugar can also be used)
Instructions
- Shape sausage into real tiny meatballs and fry in skillet until done.
- Set aside and drain on paper towels.
- Drain grease and clean out skillet.
- Melt a few tablespoonfuls butter in the cleaned skillet.
- Add apple slices and cook on higher heat to brown quickly on both sides.
- Simmer, and turn heat to low.
- Don’t turn afterwards or they will get too soft so they break up.
- Sprinkle with granulated sugar (brown sugar is nice, too, since it will caramelize).
- Add more butter if necessary and turn to coat the apples so it forms a syrup and apples are well-coated.
- Once the apples are fork-tender, add sausage miniature balls.
- Heat through; then serve.
- If saving for the next day, layer sausage in oblong pan, then apple slices (like lasagna), and warm in microwave or oven until ready to serve.

Fried Apples and Sausage makes its own syrup. This is also good made with brown sugar because the syrup will caramelize.
This is a great entree to make for weekend, company or holiday breakfasts. Especially if you enjoy a really large country-style breakfast. It was really fantastic with Pecan Cinnamon Rolls and Bacon Cheddar Sweet Potato Nests!
