Finnish Cardamom Loaf
Finnish Cardamom Loaf is another fantastic breadmaker bread recipe! A couple of weeks ago we had one of those cold winter days when it was cloudy and ice storms were kicking through North Texas. I had a real hankering for a pot of soup and some homemade bread.

I looked through my kitchen and came up with Creamy Sweet Potato and Pear Bisque which was absolutely lovely, and this bread. The recipe was easy. I had all the ingredients on hand including cardamom, so I decided to give it a try. Mmmmmmm. Perfection. The bread turned out very nicely in texture. It’s a thick, sturdy bread that’s a tad bit savory and just really tasty.
I found the recipe in my go-to breadmaker cookbook: The Complete Guide to Bread Machine Baking, published by Better Homes and Gardens in the late 1990s. If you love to bake homemade breads in the breadmaker and ever have a chance to pick up the cookbook at a garage sale or at Amazon, then I highly recommend getting it. The recipes are all easy and fantastic. I’ve not had one flop.
This particular homemade bread is excellent as sandwich bread for grilled sandwiches or French toast. But certainly it is also good as an accompaniment for soups, salads, or main dish meals. I liked it with jelly spread on it too! If you’re looking for an easy recipe for the breadmaker and you have cardamom in your spice rack, why don’t you give this delicious bread a try. The recipe below is for a two-pound bread loaf.
Finnish Cardamom Loaf is great served as a dipping bread along with any Italian style dish.
This close up shows the texture of this loaf. It’s very hearty and satisfying.
Yes, I had to dip some of the bread into the dipping oil to see how it tasted. Yum.
This is a delightful, sturdy bread for sandwiches, too.
Here’s what I did.
I used these ingredients, plus honey.
Layer ingredients in bread canister in order given. Bake on regular bread cycle. Mine takes 3 hours 50 minutes.
Allow bread to cool in canister about 15 minutes before removing from breadmaker. Butter the tops and sides of the bread to prevent crusts from hardening. Wait 15 minutes more before cutting the bread down into slices.
Slice down half of the loaf with an electric bread knife. It cuts really nice, clean pieces. Using a serrated knife will just hack the bread up in most cases.
I served Finnish Cardamom Loaf with dipping oil and spices. You can see the cardamom container in the background. This stuff is usually pretty expensive. I recommend buying it when stores like Kroger close it out sometimes. It does add a nice flavor to foods.
Here’s another close up so you can see the texture of the bread.
Finnish Cardamom Loaf is wonderful with homemade soup.
Here’s the recipe.
