Italian Cheese Biscuits

June 13, 2019Teresa

Italian Cheese Biscuits are absolutely delightful. These savory drop biscuits are filled with Italian herbs like basil, thyme, oregano and marjoram. They also include sharp cheddar cheese and garlic powder to amp up the flavors. The really nice thing about these biscuits is they can be whipped up and baked in about 30 minutes. I love quick and easy recipes. This one sure is easy.

These are similar to my Red Lobster’s Cheddar Bay Biscuits. But I wanted a different taste than parsley and garlic. They have the ease of drop biscuits (no rolling or kneading). But have the delicious herbs in the batter as well as in a garlic butter sauce spread over top after baking. They taste heavenly. While I served them with my Easy Chicken Pot Pie recipe, these are terrific as a side for soups and salads as well.

If you’ve never cooked with marjoram before you’re in for a treat. It’s a delightful herb and makes everything taste so much better. I know most of you probably don’t carry it in your spice rack. But it’s work getting and trying out. I have a homemade bread recipe that I make almost weekly. It includes this tasty herb. So I keep marjoram on hand all the time. Marjoram is wonderful in breads, sauces, casseroles and soups. Spread your wings and start using it every now and then. 🙂

Italian Cheese Biscuits really hit the spot. If you want quick and easy homemade biscuits to wow the socks off your family, this will do it. Enjoy.

Place UNBLEACHED flour in a mixing bowl. (Bleached flour toughens baked goods). Add salt, baking soda and baking powder.

Instructions
BISCUITS:
  1. Preheat oven to 400°.
  2. Lightly spray a large cookie sheet with cooking spray.
  3. Set aside.
  4. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a medium-sized mixing bowl.
  5. Cut cold butter into flour mixture using a pastry cutter.
  6. Add cheddar cheese, half-and-half or milk, garlic powder, thyme, oregano, basil and marjoram.
  7. Stir with a wooden spoon until combined, but don't over mix.
  8. Scoop dough with a one-quarter cup scoop and drop the dough onto a greased cookie sheet.
  9. The biscuits will expand while baking, so spread about two to three inches apart on greased baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 15-20 minutes in preheated oven.
  11. The tops of the biscuits should begin to turn light brown and biscuits will be firm to the touch.
GARLIC BUTTER GLAZE:
  1. While the biscuits are baking, melt butter in a small bowl in the microwave.
  2. Stir in garlic powder, thyme, oregano, basil, marjoram and salt.
  3. Remove biscuits from oven.
  4. Use a brush to spread the garlic butter over the tops and sides of all the biscuits.
Recipe Notes

NOTE: This may seem like a lot of salt for the Garlic Butter Glaze. But without that amount, the biscuits will taste too bland.

NOTE: If you do not have half-and-half on hand and substitute whole milk instead, start with about 1 ½ cups. You may not need as much liquid since it is thinner than half-and-half.
