Easy Homemade Salsa

Teresa Ambra

Easy Homemade Salsa is a fantastic, quick and easy hot sauce to make. If you love chips and salsa or anything Tex-Mex, you will love this excellent recipe. All you do is put the ingredients in a blender, then after pulsing a few times the salsa is done! This five-ingredient recipe uses whole canned tomatoes, cilantro, diced onion, garlic salt, and a jalapeno pepper. That’s it!

When John was teaching a Sunday school class at a church in Cedar Hill in the 2000s, one of the gals in our class made this marvelous “Hot Sauce” every time we had a Tex-Mex potluck–which was often. I finally asked Mylia for the recipe and she told me, “It’s so easy!”

I’ve had this Easy Homemade Salsa in my book over five years and I’ve finally gotten around to making it myself. Mylia was right. This recipe E-A-S-Y. You can adjust the amounts to suit yourself. If you want a hotter sauce, then add more jalapeno peppers when you blend it. I actually used the chopper option on my immersion blender and it worked fine, but a Vitamix or other blender will work just as well.

If you enjoy salsa recipes you may also like my Chunky Homemade SalsaPioneer Woman’s Restaurant-Style Salsa or even my Mango Salsa. No matter what you call it–whether hot sauce or salsa–if you like hot, spicy appetizers, any of these recipes do the trick.

I took a batch of Mylia’s Easy Homemade Salsa to our Sunday school class’s Build Your Own Taco party last Sunday night and it got cleaned out pretty quickly. I loved the taste of this recipe–and everybody else did too. If you’re looking for a splendid salsa-type recipe to serve on the side with quesadillas, breakfast burritos, tortilla chips or any other Tex-Mex recipe then give this amazing Easy Homemade Salsa recipe a try. You’ll be licking your lips in no time…..so will everyone else!

  • 60 oz. can whole peeled tomatoes including juice or two 29-ounce cans
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1 or 2 fresh jalapeno peppers seeded and sliced (add heat as desired)
  • 1/2 bunch cilantro
  • 1/2 to 3/4 tsp. garlic salt or more to taste

  • Makes about 2 quarts salsa.

Notes

Number one rule: it is always easier to add to than to take away! All amounts of ingredients depend on taste.

NOTE: Start with one seeded jalapeno pepper. If you want more heat, add additional jalapeno.  (Start with half and continue adding as desired). If you really like extremely HOT salsa, leave some of the seeds in the mixture.
